The Elementary Program
The students proceed in learning at their own rate; nothing to hold them back and a room full of all the wonderful things to explore to encourage them. Freeing children to learn is one of the wonderful characteristics of HMA.
Here a geography student studies state birds.
In this classroom, maybe a First Grader, by age, is doing Second Grade math, and Third Grade reading, but doing it through, again, a sensorial beginning, that was started in the Primary class. Later the student will memorize the facts and abstract concepts without teacher demands of homework or weekly tests.
“If children are not required to learn useless and meaningless things, homework is entirely unnecessary for the learning of common school subjects. But when a school requires the amassing of many facts which have little or no significance to the child, learning is slow and painful that the school is obliged to turn to the home for help out of the mess the school has created.”

Language in the Elementary Class
Language includes all skills necessary for Reading and effective writing: the parts of speech, vocabulary enrichment from our in-depth cultural studies; and speeches and class presentations with monthly projects (one of many opportunities for public speaking).
The video below shows a 2nd Grader diagramming sentences with manipulative language material.
Math in the Elementary Class
HMA’s Montessori Math Program is simply the greatest program available!
It is built upon the sensorial work of the four year old in the Primary Classroom and carries the child into the Elementary Program which continues with all the mathematical operations and concepts to Upper Elementary. The Upper Elementary culminates with statistics, the Pythagorean theorem and onto calculus.
Through the ages, many textbook companies have copied parts of the Montessori Math program for their curriculum, but only at HMA, does your child has the benefit of the full program.
These videos below shows the continuation of the study of mathematics from the Primary to the Elementary Classroom.
The Cultural Subjects:
This is the secret to the Elementary Class:
- THE REASON TO LEARN;
- THE REASON TO READ;
- THE REASON TO SET GOALS;
- THE REASON FOR EDUCATION!
What a glorious opportunity for children; the classroom is filled with:
- Science: all areas, physical and biological and chemical;
- History: so great a program, beginning at THE BEGINNING;
- Geography: again, starting from the Whole Concept. THE World, then the continents, then followed by the countries within the continents; Mountains, Rivers and Oh! so much more.
- Socialization: the development of a Social Being.; one who cares for the environment both inside as well as within the classroom or home. Children learn to solve their own problems, but get the teacher involved if they cannot.
At HMA children take care of their classroom, not only inside but in their Outdoor Classroom too. This video shows the Elementary students during one of their morning observations.
Watch for the in-depth world history and geography programs coming this year.
